Session: Revisiting Open Source Business Models
At the very first All Things Open conference in 2013 I presented a talk entitled “So You Think You Want to Start an Open Source Business?”. A lot has changed in 11 years, from the fact that open source has gone mainstream coupled with the rise of cloud computing, and this has dramatically changed the possibilities for open source companies.
This talk will revisit traditional open source business models and based on my experiences for over 20 years will examine the pros and cons of each one. I’ll also introduce a couple of new options that have arisen in the last decade and conclude with my somewhat biased opinion on what is the best way to both remain true to open source while building a scalable and profitable business.
