Session: Opening the Door to Open Source: A Workshop for First-Time Contributors (Extended Session)

Are you new to open source and unsure of how to get started? Do you feel lost trying to find projects to contribute to and don’t know how? Break down the entry barrier to open source by attending this workshop and learn how to:

  • Set up your machine for open source contributions
  • Understand the git workflow
  • Identify the tools to use for finding your first issue to contribute
  • Select your own issue to work on and leave with your first pull request!

Open source contributions help to build your portfolio, connect with other developers, and improve your coding skills. You’ll receive a handout outlining the necessary steps to contribute to open source, collaborate with other attendees on a sample project, and receive feedback from experienced contributors. The workshop covers effective strategies for engaging with project maintainers and the open source community.

Prerequisites-
Everyone is welcome! No technical skills are required, and all technical concepts will be explained during the workshop. Just bring your computer and a willingness to learn!
