Session: Be Nice In The Sandbox: How Open Source Gets Competitors to Collaborate

The OpenTelemetry project is unique for the high degree of conviviality enjoyed among the contributors, most of who whom work for competing observability vendors. The speakers – who all work for companies that are regularly at each other’s throats – will tell you about the community guardrails and incentives we’ve put in place to foster a spirit of helpful collaboration, and the strategies we employ in the End User Working Group to engage end users and get feedback.

Attendees will learn specific tactics to encourage representatives of competing companies to contribute harmoniously, and strategies to get contributors to look outwards to the needs of the end user instead of the needs of their company. As collaborating competitors, we always give a talk together before opening up to discussion so all voices can be heard. Because you and your projects will be the end users of today’s material, in this session we will try to hold a space to center your needs just as we do for OpenTelemetry’s end users.
