Session: Accessibility Reimagined

Every modern company that creates digital user experiences — including websites, mobile apps, wearables, digital dashboards, etc. — should consider whether those products are accessible for all users. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide international standards to help designers and developers create accessible experiences. However, the Global Accessibility Awareness Day Foundation reports that companies fall short when it comes to accessibility with 98% of all landing pages displaying accessibility shortcomings. Furthermore, the average landing page has 60.1 accessibility issues. This is not just a problem that designers must fix. Everyone — from product owners to back- and front-end developers and even end users — can play a role in creating a more accessible future.

As a tech community, we often struggle to meet proper industry standards, and few think beyond the minimum requirements. Yet digital assets have the unique opportunity to vastly improve digital content usability for people with cognitive disabilities and visual impairments. Together we can reimagine digital accessibility, move beyond the minimum, and improve user experiences for everyone.

Join me to learn:
1.) How we can use open source principles to build accessibility into the core of atomic design systems
2.) How tokens, variables, and themes can expedite building robust digital interfaces beyond the minimum standard to create genuinely accessible experiences
3.) How to unify and align design and development design system assets, simplifying the design to development lifecycle
